Somebody chose a card, sat down with it, and coloured it in. Then they turned it over, wrote to you, and put it in the post. None of that is quick and none of it happens by accident.

Whatever else is going on, that is worth knowing. An hour of somebody's attention cannot be bought, borrowed or hurried, and they gave you one on purpose.

How the drawings are made

Every card starts as a creature or a plant that lives here, and ends as an outline printed on card. We would rather tell you how that happens than let you wonder.

The line work is developed using AI image tools. It is then selected, corrected, laid out and proofed by hand in our Cambridge studio before it goes anywhere near a press, and that correcting is most of the work. Plenty are thrown away. What survives gets checked at print size, because a line that looks fine on a screen can close up on paper and spoil the card for whoever is colouring it.

We say that plainly because it is true, and because you are holding the result.

The part we cannot make

The colour is not ours. Neither is the choosing, nor the sitting down, nor the handwriting on the back, nor the fact that it was you they were thinking about the whole time.

We print lines on card. Everything that made this worth putting in your hand was added by somebody who knows you.
